Yahiko is from a samurai family but both his parents died as a result of the war. He was enslaved by a band of ruffians and made to pickpocket for them. One day he decided to pickpocket Kenshin's wallet. Kaoru was to fast for Yahiko though and he was caught red handed. Kenshin and Kaoru removed Yahiko from the ruffians possession and he becomes Kaoru's new student. He might not have liked being taught by a woman and rather have had Kenshin teach him, but after awhile he admitted to himself that Kaoru wasn't a bad teacher.
Yahiko looks up to Kenshin and wants to be strong so he practices hard. When he becomes older he will make a fine swordsman. He teases Kaoru unmercifully and Sano is like a brother to him. He has a crush on Tsubame. It might seem like Yahiko gets left out a lot, but the fact of the matter is that he is only a ten year old boy and Sano and Kenshin try to protect him as much as they try to help him grow up.
