Sano lost his parents when he was young and became a member of the Sekihoutai group. The Sekihoutai group boss, Sagara Souzou, took care of Sano and raised him like a son. The Sekihoutai group was framed by the Ishin Shishi and the new goverment and everyone was killed. Sano survived because of his boss. Sano hates the government and the Ishin Shishi becauses of this. Sano took his bosses' name to honor him and became an infamous gangster, Zanza. He was wondering around bored, because no one was a challenge in a fight to him, one day and was hired to kill Kenshin. After they fought, Sano losing, he decided that Kenshin was like his boss and would become Kenshin's new best friend. Sano gave up the name Zanza but not the character of "Evil" on his shirt. He now fights along side Kenshin.
Sano is strong and the only person Kenshin fights along without worrying about. Sano is lazy, gambles, and leeches but is a good person. He and Megumi don't get along at all, but it is just to mask their true feelings. He fights alone side Kenshin and gets really angry when he is treated as a weakness.
